History

The Smalls family has been involved in the field of construction for over 70 years, since Jeffrey’s grandfather, Samuel Smalls, ventured into business.  Samuel was a carpenter in the late 1940’s and later mastered the art of plumbing, becoming one of the first and very successful African American Master Plumbers in New York.

After seeing his father’s success, Jeffrey’s father, James Smalls, formed J.E. Smalls Enterprises, Inc., when he obtained his Master Plumber’s license in 1976.  Over his 30 years in the business, James cultivated a substantial customer base in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn, New York.

In 1997, Jeffrey Smalls established Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc., the third generation of Smalls entrepreneurs.  Since 1997, Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc., has established itself to be one of the premier electrical contracting companies in the New York City area building on the past 70 years of construction experience.  Today, our unrivaled performance and commitment to quality has enabled Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc., to continue to exceed the expectations of our customers and critics alike.

Honesty, reliability and hard work have been the guiding standards that continue to carry on the Smalls name in the construction industry.

Jeffrey J. Smalls | President, CEO

Jeffrey Smalls is President and CEO of Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc.  Mr. Smalls was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.  He graduated from W.E. Grady High School in 1989 and attended New York City Technical College where he studied Electrical Technology.

While in college Mr. Smalls gained his experience working as an Electrician for several large Electrical Contractors before becoming a Foreman  where he was responsible for the completion of projects totaling over $40 Million.  Mr. Smalls also attended Boro of Manhattan Community College and New York University.  He received his Master Electrician’s License in 1997, becoming the youngest licensee in New York City the same year he founded Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc., whose primary customers include the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, MTA-New York City Transit, and the New York State Department of Transportation.

Mr. Smalls is a member of the Subcontractors Trade Association, the Building Trades Employers’ Association, the New York Electrical Contractors Association, the National Electrical Contractors Association and served as Chairman of the School Advisory Board of Alfred E. Smith High School in the Bronx.  Smalls Electrical Construction, Inc., is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union #3.

Jeffrey Smalls has been selected as one of the “40 Under Forty” honorees by The Network Journal for 2007.  In addition, Smalls Electrical was previously chosen as one of the 500 fastest-growing companies nationwide by INC. Magazine for 2007.  Mr. Smalls was named as one of Crain’s New York Business’ Top Entrepreneurs’ for 2006,  placed #38  on the Top 100 Specialty Contractors in New York by New York Construction Magazine for 2006, also honored as “2006 Emerging Contractor of the Year” by the New York State Association of Minority Contractors

Some of the many awards include – New York Construction magazine as #34 on the Top 100 Specialty Contractors for 2007; Crain’s New York Business, Top Entrepreneurs’ for 2006; and The Network Journal, 40 Under Forty, Mastering the Art of Excellence award, 2007.

Smalls Electrical was honored in Chicago at the annual extravaganza by Inc. 500, as one of the 500 fastest – growing private companies in America.  As an entrepreneur, Inc. 500 highlights these superstars and their amazing achievements.  The Inc. 500 list has long provided a showcase for the best in American business and has been the first to identify many top companies that are branded including Microsoft, Timberland, and Domino’s Pizza. The Inc. 500 is a look at our nation’s future, with the Inc. 500 entrepreneurs leading us onward and upward.
